Saturday night, I decided to see what the tC could do on the track.  I met up with a bunch of friends at the Cedar Falls Raceway.  It was my first time at a 1/4 mile track (I had only run 1/8's previously).  Practice runs started at 9:00PM.  There were lots of cars there, both imports and domestics....and I even met another guy with a tC.  I had some trouble with figuring out what RPMs I should launch at, but it was still a blast.  Made it to the second round of eliminations, not bad for my first time racing on 4 wheels.

Keep in mind, my car is totally stock with the spare tire left in the back (I'd rather be safe than sorry 2 hours away from home) and no weight reductions done.  My best E/T was 15.987sec and fastest trap speed was 86.50mph.  It was a blast.

I had two problems racing.  The first, like I said, was my launch.  I am going to have to do some more racing to figure out where to launch at to get my 60ft times down.  The second problem I noticed was that when I was about 100-150 feet from the finish line, I was hitting the rev limiter in 3rd gear.  I guess that means I need to make my car faster so that I can run for a while in 4th

It was a very fun but looong night.  Stephanie and I didn't get back home until about 4:30am and that was only because we left not too long after I got knocked out of eliminations.  There were some amazing vehicles there including a 12 second Evo, a 12 second supercharged V-8 RX-7, a very quick 350Z, a snowmobile that was running in the 11's, numerious crotch rockets, and more DSM's than you could shake a stick at.

They are doing these all night drags again July 1st and September 2nd.  I definately want to go back.  If anyone else is interested in going, let me know.  It would be fun to cruise/meet up at the track to have some more Scion support.  Besides, its only $20.

Wait a min. A v-8 rx-7? What the hell? Did someone do an engine swap on it or what?

Yea, it was a first gen RX-7.  It is pretty common in the RX-7 community to do a V8 swap.  I would never do it because the 12A/13B rotary engine is what makes a RX7 an RX7.  It was pretty cool.  No hood on it because the engine sat up so high and it had a huge supercharger and filter on top of that.  Sounded nice when he had it running though.

They used to call it the Scarab conversion.  Don't know why, but do a google on that and you'll probably find some info.

Hitting the track would be pretty sweet.  Maybe I'll drag mine out there just for kicks.  Probably the September night though.  Too much going on in June/July!

I'm don't know about July, might be a bit tight on money but I'm def down for sept. I'd love to see what my little girly could lay down.

I know there are quite a few people who have done V-8 swaps in the little Miata's as well. Its called a Monster Miata and it's more common then you think. I've seen a few RX-7's with SR20 swaps too but I'm with Tony, the Wankel is what makes an RX-7 what it is.

I have always wanted to put a massive motor in a Geo Metro.  Talk about a sleeper.  Those cars are so light.  That would be fun.  Cheesy

Our engine bay is too small for a 2jz-gte. plus you would have to convert to RWD stupid inline 6

Good luck getting the r626dett to work in a tC. LOL that would be tight though.

I bet with some wiggling, we could get a K20 or a K24 slapped into a tC. Our engine is Torquier though, so I bet the 2AZ-FE would be quicker once boosted as the boost would come on at a lower RPM.

Nick,
Who are you going to have tune the Emanage?

It will take a some trial and error to figure out where to launch. Remember to heat up your tires. Launching at 2500 RPM will squeal tires if they arent heated up.
left foot on the brake, right on the gas and release the Brake,,,,,,I LOVE AUTOS for drag Racing.
I launch my Automatic Tranny at 2500-3000 RPM, wait for the tires to hook up then FLOOR it!

We need to go on the first. I want to see what my car can do being N/A and all!

Actually a 2JZ-GTE would fit under your hood. it would be a VERY tight fit but I measured it and it works.

P.S. you'll need a cowel hood.

The Transmission on the other hand would take some fanagling with a BFH and maybe a cutting torch or two. that was a Project that I started workin on since I was told I was going to be building a RWD tC. The project was scrapped once we realized how much money we were talking and how much time it would take. we were on a tighter sched. then it would allow.

I have been told by everyone that has been racing for any amount of time that heating up street tires is a waste of tread.  Plus, you splatter water all over the place because of the tread so the cars after you suffer.  It was a hot night anyway so my tires were already pre-heated Smiley

I was getting decent at launching towards the end, I like having the 5-speed for racing.  I would get close to the staging lights and trigger the first one.  Then, I would feather the clutch to light the second light and keep the clutch pedal depressed about half an inch from engaging.  When the other guy was staged, I would raise the RPMs to about 2,500 or 3,000 and let the clutch out when it went green.  I got decent at it towards the end of the night.  I just need more practice.

I am hoping to hit the remaining two races of the season.  It would be nice to have some company.

I might go with but wouldn't be racing. Just give me a heads up call or message like a day or two before.

You're absolutely right, heating up radial tires actually kills your traction even more.  What you're supposed to do is just give them a quick spin to get the gravel and sand off of them.

It sounds like a good time, but this summer is going to be super busy for me, so I probably won't be able to make it.
